Carlin’s Kaylen Frederick has returned to the top step of the podium in the BRDC British Formula Three Championship after a solid weekend of racing at Donington Park.

The American racer proved his pace first thing on Saturday morning, securing two pole positions – one of which he converted into a race victory later that day. Teammate Nazim Azman was also on the pace and qualified brilliantly, eventually taking a podium for third in the final race of the weekend.

The weekend at Donington got underway on Thursday with a full day of testing at the Leicestershire circuit before the Carlin duo had the chance to do it all over again on Friday in anticipation of the weekend.

Warm weather and clear skies on Saturday morning brought perfect qualifying conditions which Frederick made the most of. Despite track limits being high on the agenda, the pair were quick to get to grips with the challenges facing them, and Frederick set the screens alight as the clock counted down throughout the 20-minute session. Both drivers sat nicely at the top half of the grid and soon enough Frederick made his move to the very top of the timing screens. Coming under a little pressure, the talented American didn’t let this get to him as he set fastest lap after fastest lap.
Two successive great laps would secure pole position for both races one and three of the weekend. Meanwhile, Azman was also looking strong and qualified on the third row of the grid in sixth for the opening race of the weekend.

Going from pole later in the day, Frederick made sure to hold the advantage off the line and controlled the pace throughout. He kept a good gap to those behind and crossed the line to take the victory. Azman took fifth as the flag fell.
This strong team result meant that they would start the reverse grid from down the order with hard work on their hands. Frederick gained a couple of places in the race to him finish 12th and Azman 14th.

The third and final race of the weekend on Sunday afternoon provided somewhat more drama than the previous two for the Carlin squad as Frederick dropped back from pole position off the line. Holding on to third place throughout, he was penalised at the very end leaving Azman third following another strong race for the Malaysian driver.

Frederick said of the race win:

” We got the job done and it’s a great boost of confidence for us. It was a good comeback after the last weekend we had.”
