Sharp enjoyed a stellar debut in the series even though his age meant he missed the opening round of the season. Despite this, he still went onto collect two race victories, was a regular podium finisher and finished the season fourth overall. Most recently, Sharp enjoyed an incredible weekend in Abu Dhabi, as part of the Formula One support series, where he took two dominant victories in the UAE F4 Trophy event. Sharp joins previously announced Dion Gowda in Carlin’s confirmed 2023 line-up so far.
Sharp came to the UK at the beginning of the 2022 season following an impressive CV in karting which saw him win more national titles and series wins than any of his peers by the age 12. Backed by Rodin Cars, Sharp joined Carlin’s British F4 team aged just 14, however the young Kiwi had to sit on the side lines for the opening round of the season until he reached his 15tbirthday and became eligible to race in the championship
Turning 15 in time for the second round of the season, Sharp was able to hit the ground running and get his season underway where he immediately showed his promise. The New Zealander took a total of two wins and12 podiums on his way to finishing fourth overall in the standings – a brilliant effort from the rookie racer.
Keeping his skills nicely up to speed, Sharp took on the challenge of the UAE Formula Four Trophy event at the Yas Marina circuit, Abu Dhabi last month. In front of Formula One teams and crowds alike, the Carlin driver dominated the two races on offer to clinch both victories. Sharp now looks to build on every ounce of experience from his debut season as he returns to the fast-paced series as one to watch.
Reflecting on staying with the team, Sharp said,
“First and foremost, I must thank David Dicker and his amazing Rodin Cars company for making all this possible. I’m thrilled to be staying with Carlin after what was an amazing debut season. Coming from New Zealand, it’s been a big learning curve but, already, I’ve learned so much which will help me in the future. I’ve had a bit of success, too, which is a good progression towards my goal of Formula 1.”
Trevor Carlin added,
“We are so pleased that Louis has decided to spend another season in British F4 where I truly believe he will be a title contender next season. Despite being one of, if not the, youngest driver in the field this year, he proved racing maturity far beyond his years and he has been fantastic to work with both in and outside the car. We’re very proud that Rodin Cars have selected Carlin to continue Louis’ career and I have no doubt that he is capable a brilliant 2023 season; I look forward to seeing what he achieves with a year of experience now under his belt.”
