Rodin Motorsport claimed back-to-back Formula 2 Bahrain Feature Race victories following Alex Dunne’s brilliant win at the Sakhir circuit.
The victory, echoing Rodin Motorsport’s 2024 Feature Race win at the circuit with Zane Maloney, was even more significant given that this was the first victory for an Irish driver in the Championship in what was the series’ 200th race.
The team's potential for success was laid down during Friday’s qualifying, with Dunne claiming an impressive fourth place in the session, just three-tenths off the pole position. This put him right in the fight for Sunday’s Feature race and kept him in contention for a decent points haul in the Sprint. A challenging session for teammate Amaury Cordeel saw him qualify P21, with a mountain to climb during the weekend.
Dunne showed significant pace during Saturday’s Sprint, being in the heat of the fight for a good haul of points and challenging for a podium place at one stage. Unfortunately, contact late on in the race caused him to lose his front wing and finish the race in P19. Amongst the chaos in the mid pack, Cordeel was able to keep his nose clean, climbing to P12 on the road and narrowly missing out on a points place.
Starting fourth on the grid, the Dunne pulled off a fantastic start and solidified his position in the opening few laps to clinch the race lead by lap seven of the race in a decisive move. Composure from the Irish racer and the Rodin Motorsport team during the pit cycle meant he retained his lead, managing to make the over-cut strategy work to his favour. Dunne was the class of the field and pulled an impressive margin of 8.2 seconds over his nearest competitor. Once again, Cordeel showed promise, able to avoid any big moments and bring his car home in P12.
Formula 2 action returns again this weekend as we take to the Jeddah Corniche Circuit for the third round of the championship.
