Abbi Pulling has extended her championship lead in the F1 Academy Championship to an incredible 245 points with double pole position followed by two race victories in both the races on offer this weekend in Singapore. The Alpine Academy racer took the hot and humid weekend in her stride and claimed enough points to put herself in with the chance of wrapping up the title with one round to spare at the next event in Qatar. However it was a mixed weekend for Jess Edgar and Lola Lovinfosse who both found themselves outside of the points paying positions.
The fifth round of the championship saw the field move to the stunning city of Singapore with a dusk qualifying under the lights to look forward to. However the drama started before the lights dimmed in free practice for Edgar with a slight tap into the wall damaging her rear wing and seeing her miss out on vital track time. This put the American Express backed racer on the back foot going into qualifying; as the flag fell Edgar had set the 13thquickest time with her Charlotte Tilbury backed team mate just ahead in 12th.However Pulling continued her incredible form to set multiple flying laps and take both pole positions on offer.
A reset into Saturday, with rain falling overnight, meant slightly different track conditions for the drivers to contend with. Pulling however flew off the line well and took a lights to flag victory around the Marina Bay circuit. A relatively processional affair behind for Lovinfosse and Edgar saw the duo finish 11th and 13th respectively.
A final race on Sunday allowed for the first and only safety car of the weekend to appear on track. A good start for Pulling off the line from pole meant she led as the field swooped around the opening corners of the race however just a few laps of racing action later, including some great side by side action with cars further down the field, proceedings were soon neutralised by the safety car giving Pulling a restart to contend with however the British racer took this in her stride and clinched her second race of the weekend and a fastest lap to top things off. Lovinfosse had a few battles in her own race and crossed the line 13th with Edgar coming in 15th.
Pulling said of the weekend, “It’s been incredible here in Singapore. Double pole position was pretty special under the floodlights on Friday and then to wrap up a double win feels really good. It’s been flawless all weekend from both sides with myself and with the team – I can’t thank them enough for everything this weekend. Now I’m just focusing on heading into Qatar to try and get that little bit closer to the championship title.”
